"Barring the possibility of Jaganmohan Reddy coming to power, the era of YSR as far as Congress is concerned is over," said a senior leader.
According to sources, Sonia Gandhi listed out to the CM two reasons for the party to abandon YSR. The reasons are: "One that the YSR legacy would not benefit Congress as Jagan has proved himself to be its inheritor and all the welfare schemes initiated by YSR are now being claimed by his son. It is time Congress claims the welfare schemes like Rs 2-a-kg rice, Arogyasri, Indiramma housing, free power and Pavala Vaddi as its own," said the sources.
The decision to stop promoting YSR is also an admission by Congress that it has not been able to inherit the legacy. Soon after taking over as CM in November last year, Kiran Kumar Reddy had vowed that all the welfare schemes initiated by YSR would be continued by his government. "Congress admitted that Jagan is the inheritor of the YSR legacy. It is time for us to look at ways to strengthen the party," said the sources.
Some Congress leaders welcomed the move. "When I met Sonia Gandhi recently, I told her clearly that it was time to strengthen the image of Congress rather than that of YSR," health minister D L Ravindra Reddy told TOI.
